We just finished a whirlwind trip to DC. It was less than 36 hours in the nation’s capital, to meet up with part of the team from our Smithsonian project and check out the space for the exhibit.
I like to make the most out of every trip, so I wanted to stay somewhere that had a lot of history. In DC, that’s almost every place. Honestly, my first choice was the Watergate Hotel, but oh boy, it had some bad reviews! So we ended up at the Riggs, built in a former bank. The building dates back to 1891, and was the bank of 23 former presidents! But, for me, that wasn’t the most interesting thing about it. The Riggs has, to put it mildly, a subtle feminist agenda. It’s not in any of their branding, but all over the hotel, there are little touches highlighting and elevating women.
The hotel features First Lady Suites, inspired by the design tastes of former first ladies. And following in that theme, the cafe has a First Ladies of Wine list, featuring wines by women.
The incredible Christmas tree in the lobby is designed by Alexis Bittar. It features small glass bottles filled with quotes by inspirational women.
Oh, and also lots of boob ornaments. The hotel doesn’t mention that part on its website, but boy oh boy, there are so many boobs.
In your room, you’ll find books of poetry by female poets. We had Sylvia Plath in our room, but I’ve read that there’s a selection, and some rooms feature Bronte or Eliot.
Oh, and the Smithsonian. Still TOP SECRET, but I can show you this hilarious photo of some of the people who are bringing the exhibit to life.
We hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. WE WILL BE WORKING! *le sigh*
