Previously— Thea doesn’t trust anyone. And as a Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied Vienna, there’s not much that’s going to change her mind. This has distanced Thea from her former best friend, Rachel. Rachel’s father is Jewish, but her mother is not–and therefore Rachel has been able to “pass.” In order to maintain this privilege, she has abandoned Thea. But now things are changing, and Rachel has become the target of Karl, the leader of the school’s Hitler Youth. Also in their class is Hu, the son of a Chinese diplomat. Hu has been struggling to find his place in this foreign city. The two girls come crashing into his life one day when he is at the tailor shop with his mother.
When Thea sees Karl and his cohorts chase Rachel through the streets, she cannot abandon her former friend. She pulls Rachel inside the tailor shop where her friend Jacob works. But Jacob can only do so much against a gang of Hitler Youth. Fortunately, Consul Ho Feng-Shan is picking up some items and convinces Karl he saw the girls run in the other direction. Young Hu watches this, seeing Consul Ho endanger himself for the young Jews.
