Once upon a time, I was on a beach in Costa Rica, relaxing, playing with monkeys, and drinking pina coladas. Out of nowhere I got an email from a Creative Director at Epic Games.

Hello Khary. A potential new project just came up I thought you might be interested in. Fortnite is in talks to do a collaboration with the Wu-Tang Clan and we will need a loading screen illustration and possibly a small spot illustration to be used on shirts.

If you know anything about me, you know that I love hip-hop. And of all the hip-hop groups that exist, Wu-Tang Clan is almost certainly my favorite. Of all time. Bar none. Also, I love video games! And Fortnite is one of the biggest games currently out. Ask your kids. They’ll tell you. Me + Wu-Tang + Fortnite = a match made in heaven. So once I got back to Brooklyn, I got to work.

The task was simple: create an in-game loading screen showcasing the characters created for this collaboration. As far as art direction, I had carte blanche. I just knew that I had to sell my vision in a meeting with the fine folks from Epic and Wu-Tang themselves. No pressure.

“If what you say is true, the Fortnite and the Wu-Tang could be dangerous.”
